Maternal and Child Health

See it in action

In a time of information overload, parents are time-poor, VERSA created an app supported by a virtual nurse. Nurse Nora is a chatbot that connects parents to relevant and trusted information to care for their young child.

Challenge

Strengthening Communication and Engagement

Parents are incredibly time poor, so finding reliable advice from a trusted source is important. With over 150 years of knowledge to share, The Victorian Department of Health & Human Services and the Maternal Child Health needed to help strengthen communication with families and offer support in the form of a trusted and convenient tool that can be used when parents need it most.

Solution

Using AI to find the best content for parents

Our team researched, designed and built a ‘Virtual MCH Nurse’, a conversational AI-based chatbot. The chat-enabled app allowed parents to ask specific questions and receive responses in a conversational format. Nurse Nora helps address the information seeking behaviours identified in user research, and provides parents with active, personalised support.

We worked directly with over 100 families to understand their needs, habits and challenges through a robust programme of user testing and research. Through one-on-one interviews, surveys, focus groups we derived a set of core features and recommendations.

Technology

Delivered our Conversational AI Expertise

The language model was designed to allow app users to ask questions and received responses created to their child’s own development phase. The language model can answer over 400 questions, and surfaces over 1980 pieces of content. Google’s DialogFlow is used to drive the natural language processing. The bespoke content management solution also helped admins to effectively train the language model, by highlighting conflicting data at a glance, ensuring a robust and error-free experience.

Results

Loved by client and by parents

The finished app has been well received with great enthusiasm by parents and the MCH community alike. Results show 50,000 downloads in the first 12 months, and over 80,000 total downloads-  and 3,400 monthly chatbot interactions. We have expanded the features within the app since the initial launch, adding a child growth tracker, content in 8 different languages, sleep tracking and settling and much more!
